Healthy eating for the Holidays
By Cynthia Floyd

With the holidays upon us many people worry about weight gain. We tend to gain weight from November to January because we are eating more and exercise less. With all the parties to attend meals, the meals to prepare for family, the snacks we normally don’t eat and the disruption to our usual schedule we tend to gain an average of 8 pounds! This doesn’t have to happen. Here are a few to help keep those unwanted pounds at bay.

At parties:

  •  Stay away from the h’or doievres.
  • Try not to stand right next to the food. It is too tempting to continue snacking.
  • Nibble vegetable sticks, crackers and low fat meats such as ham and turkey rather than high fat nuts, cheese and cold cuts.
  • Remember, a little eggnog is okay but remember it is 200 calories for ½ cup! (1/2 cup of juice is 60 calories)
  • When you go to dinners or parties bring a healthy dish of your own. This way you know there will be something healthy to eat and you can show your family/friends try to continue on your exercise routing healthy does not equal tasteless.

During the holiday season:

·        Remember to drink 8 glasses of water/day.

·        Keep up with your normal exercise routine

·        Take a break from holiday preparation to go for a walk or to the gym.
